Core Safety Guidelines
- Stay Indoors: As a general rule, if it is too cold for you, it is too cold for your pet. Most pets should remain indoors when temperatures drop below 32°F (0°C).
- Check the Car: Feral or outdoor cats often seek warmth near car engines. Before starting your vehicle, bang on the hood or honk the horn to alert any hidden animals.
- Avoid Ice: Keep pets away from frozen bodies of water like ponds or lakes, as thin ice can break and lead to life-threatening situations.
- Never Leave Pets in Cars: Cold cars act like refrigerators, trapping freezing air and putting pets at risk for rapid hypothermia.

Physical Care & Maintenance
- Paw Protection:
- Wipe Down: After walks, thoroughly clean and dry your pet’s paws, legs, and belly to remove toxic de-icing salts and antifreeze.
- Balms & Booties: Use a paw balm to prevent cracking or train your pet to wear well-fitting booties for maximum protection.
- Grooming: Trim the hair between your dog’s toes to prevent ice balls from forming.
- Coat Care: Do not shave your pet down to the skin during winter; a longer coat provides essential insulation. For short-haired breeds or small dogs, provide a warm coat or sweater.
- Hydration & Nutrition:
- Ensure pets have constant access to fresh, non-frozen water. Use heated bowls for outdoor animals.
- Outdoor pets may need increased calories to generate body heat, while indoor-only pets might need fewer calories if their activity level decreases.

Health Monitoring
- Arthritis Awareness: Cold weather can exacerbate joint stiffness. Ensure senior pets have a warm, soft bed away from drafts and consider consulting a vet for supplements.
- Hypothermia Signs: Watch for shivering, lethargy, muscle stiffness, or shallow breathing. If these occur, move the pet to a warm area and contact a veterinarian immediately.
- Poison Control: If you suspect your pet has ingested antifreeze (which has a sweet taste) or other chemicals, contact the ASPCA Poison Control at 1-888-426-4435 immediately.
